Room 507, Sunday Evening

In exchange for getting to stay in Fandom for the summer, Jason had to agree to do some extra educational things for Bruce, and today, that meant going through a list of "classic" books that he needed to read in the next few months. Jason didn't understand the point of this - when was Jane Austen ever going to help him fight criminals? - but he also didn't want to get in trouble. At the moment, at least. Hopefully, some of the books wouldn't turn out to be as bad as he was imagining.

"Being a little kid didn't count," Jason said, glaring at Nico a little for the laughing.

"Of course not, that would be gross." Still Nico was looking amused. "Don't be mad, Jay, you can't help what happens to you here."

"I know. Which is why you shouldn't laugh," Jason said. That probably would have sounded more convincing if he didn't laugh when other people went crazy, but it was different when it was him.

"You'll get revenge when something happens to me," Nico promised, reaching to pat his shoulder. "Not that I'm willing to let anything happen."

"Nothing ever happens to you. You're always okay," Jason pointed out. "It's like the island doesn't want to mess with demigods." Which he could understand, but it was still annoying.

"Or I'm just screwed up enough that the island catches me a break," Nico suggested.

"I like my theory better," Jason said, glancing at Nico. "You're not screwed up."

"I'm the definition of screwed up," Nico corrected. "Look it up in a dictionary and you'll see the family portrait. But it's okay, I'm good at ignoring it in favor of hanging around really hot guys." Like the one he was slinging his arm around.

"I guess I'm good at ignoring it too then," Jason said, leaning closer to Nico. "Because I think you're fine just the way you are."

"It's awesome the way you do that," Nico replied, smiling. "Liking me no matter what. Even when I interrupt your school stuff. Uh, though you'll tell me if you're in danger of flunking, right? I don't want Bruce ripping you out of school."

"I'm not going to flunk anything," Jason assured him. "Bruce doesn't give me a grade for the stuff I have to do for him, thankfully."

"And still you read anything the guy hands you. So dedicated." Oddly, Nico was more dedicated to Jason than school.

"I don't want him to get pissed at me, or pull me out of school," Jason said. And to think, a year ago he would have killed to be back in Gotham. "Do I think his ideas are weird? Yeah. But I'm not gonna argue with him about small stuff. I have to save my energy for the big arguments."

"I know who I'll come to if I end up stuck in a lit class," Nico shared. "Or to learn more about this courting thing."

"Oh shut up," Jason said, playfully hitting Nico in the side. "Courting is like what we do, without the sex."

"So it's this right now? Me sitting here and making fun of you?" Nico checked.

"Minus the making fun of me," Jason said, with a hint of a glare. "It's you sitting here and wishing you could be kissing me instead, which is a possibility that's getting smaller and smaller every time you mock me."

"Ouch, I don't like hearing that," Nico admitted. "Is this something the author specified?"

"Not specifically, but I think if she was here now, she'd be on my side," Jason said. Since Nico seemed more contrite, Jason scooted closer again.

"So who'd be on my side?" he asked, thinking his was the side of good. "Is there some guy in the book trying to get a little action?" Why was he asking?

"Um. Kind of," Jason said, trying not to turn red as he realized he'd somehow ended up as the girl in this conversation. Oops. "I don't know if he's going to get what he wants at the end, but he's handsome and everyone wants him. So, I think it'll end well for him."

Nico had to wonder if that would translate to his own life. "Everybody always wants the handsome guys, huh? Lemme guess, really nice scar?"

"Scars weren't really cool in the 1800's," Jason said, brushing his hand over Nico's cheek where Luke had his scar. "And I think they're kind of overrated too."

"Yeah?" He was kind of attached to the way Jason looked at him when he did stuff like that.

"Yeah," Jason said. "They get in the way. There's lots of other ways to be badass."
