Room 507, Saturday Evening

Jason and Nico had had every intention of going on an actual date tonight. At least, that had been the plan until their evening out had been cut short by an angry waiter who didn't understand that people had offerings of food to make, and that the fire hadn't been that big, and the napkins they'd used to snuff the flames were already were already frayed so they would have had to throw them out anyway.

The new plan involved pizza and the safety of Jason's room, which Jason decided should have been their plan all along. "I didn't even want to go to Outback, to be honest. Nothing on the menu looked as good as pizza," he said, trying to make Nico feel better as they sat down on his bed.

Jason's room was much safer than restaurants with people who yelled and booted customers for using the candles provided. Why have candles on a table if not for burning offerings?

"In my defense, I've never had cheese fries burn that hot before," Nico said, turning a little red because he really hadn't meant to ruin anything.

"Maybe their candles were bad?" Jason said. "Or the cheese fries?" Although they had looked really good, but he didn't think that would be good to point out right now.

No way the fries were bad. Nico was not going to focus on the loss or he might end up going begging to Luke. "Had to be the candles. More places should have braziers available."

He settled his back against the wall and eyed the pizza, thinking he could skip the offering after the little nightmare they'd just gotten past.

"Do you still need to do your food burning thing? I...don't think I have a brazier lying around." And here he thought he was prepared for just about everything.

"I'd rather not set your bed on fire," Nico said, looking a little ashamed.

"I'd rather you not set my bed on fire either, but I don't want to mess with your ritual. It's important to you, right?" Jason asked. If it was important to Nico, he wouldn't stop him.

"A little," he admitted. "It's weird, I guess. I'm probably the only one on the island still making an offering, so I try to remember every time." Unless Luke was in the room, and then he did it later, shh. "That probably sounds pretty stupid, huh?"

"It doesn't sound stupid if you think someone's still listening," Jason said. "If you're doing it out of fear of being smited for not doing it, then that's not cool. But if you mean it...well, that's different."

"Someone has to remember the gods," Nico said, wondering if he looked as dorky as he felt saying this stuff. "Otherwise they disappear. And I mean, it's a family thing."

"Family is important," Jason said with a smile. "Especially when it's your own. And especially when you look kind of adorable talking about it."

"You did not just call me adorable," Nico complained, leaning over to give Jason a little shove. "Now I won't feel badly if your bed goes up in flames."

"I did, and I'm not taking it back," Jason said with a laugh. "Just remember, if you melt my bed, you'll have to sleep on the floor when you stay over."

"Yeah, but I'd be sleeping on the floor with you so I'm sure it wouldn't be too awful." And still better than a bed of leaves in the woods somewhere.

"Now you're just being flattering," Jason said, opening the pizza boxes as he looked around for a way to light up. "You could burn a little piece in my trash can? I'll be quick to get it out and maybe that won't set off the fire alarm."

"Maybe some crust so there's no grease like, uh, earlier." Nico reached to rip off a chunk, thinking maybe he'd live this down if he could keep anyone else from hearing about it. "This is when it would pay to have Percy's fountain on hand."

"I could go steal it out of his room," Jason said with a smile, always happy to offer to deface things that belonged to Percy.

"I thought maybe after a week together you wouldn't get that look on your face at hearing his name," Nico said, amused by Jason's suggestion. "If you want, I could invite him up for pizza?"

"Don't you dare. This is our date," Jason said. "And besides, I've spent enough time with Percy for a year," he added quickly, trying to cover up the D-word. It was still a little scary.

Nico caught the date word and tried not to smile like a dork over it even as he pulled his lighter from his pocket. "Still? Even after the fire and failing at being out in public?"

"Please, this is the most exciting night I've had in a while. Aside from the guys who thought they were girls at a sleepover the other night," Jason said, grabbing his trashcan and setting it down next to the bed. "We can try the going out part another night."

"You had a sleepover with guys who thought they were girls?" Nico asked, pausing in his fire starting to glance at Jason.

"I didn't have a sleepover with them. They got bitten by gremlins and thought they were having a sleepover, complete with makeup and pillow fighting. It was pretty entertaining." Aside from getting talked into putting on lip gloss, but he was still pretending that didn't happen.

"So you just watched?" The look on Nico's face probably gave away how kinky that sounded to him. "And they think I'm a creeper."

"Actually, I kind of took pictures too," Jason admitted, turning a little red at how dirty that sounded after Nico's question. "And I talked to them, 'cause I wanted to see how crazy they really were."

"Pictures? For personal or blackmail use?" Nico wondered. Totally valid question when things were put that way.
