Room 507, Thursday Evening

With only one class left between himself and spring break, Jason was taking some time to try to start packing. "Try" being the operative word there, since he'd never actually been to Hawaii, and didn't know what to pack. He knew how to pack light, and he knew how to pack for emergencies, so he was trying to combine those and make it all fit into one bag. So far, his plan was working well enough, but he wasn't sure how long that would last.

After being on the receiving end of a very awkward Iris message, Nico had some seriously bad news to share which meant emerging unannounced from the shadows to find Jason packing away.

"You know it's only Thursday, right?" Nico verified, already sorry he was going to miss the opportunity to tease Jason about being a nerd on vacation.

"I'm well aware of what day it is," Jason said, getting much better about not jumping at randomly hearing the sound of Nico's voice. "I'm only starting. I'll get around to the real packing tomorrow, probably. Or, I can finish and bug you while you pack."

"Yeah, about that..." Nico moved to flop onto Jason's bed. "I don't get to go."

Were there better ways of saying such a thing? Probably, but Nico wasn't all that great at being normal.

"What do you mean, you don't get to go? Is the school not letting you?" Jason asked.

"I wish," Nico replied. "I got a message from home calling me back for some undisclosed reason. Percy had better not be lost again or the one here is totally earning my wrath." He still wasn't over the first time.

"So, you're not going on the trip at all?" Jason asked, frowning and moving to the bed. "Do you think there's trouble at home, or could you be getting called back for a good reason?"

He shrugged, not sure Jason shared his definition of good. "Best case they've got some sort of task suited to my abilities, worst case I'm stuck listening to Demeter whine about the lack of whole grain in my diet." Either way Nico would probably rather be in Hawaii.

"Is there any way to get out of it? Good behavior for the next few days or something?" Jason was keeping himself a small distance from Nico, in case good behavior meant being really good.

"I'm not sure I know what good behavior would even entail," Nico admitted, turning and scooting a little closer to Jason. "Maybe I could crash the trip if I get whatever it is done fast enough?"

"I'd like that a lot. I was so looking forward to getting you out in the sun," Jason teased. "Or, at least, to have time to spend with you without classes getting in the way."

"Trust me, even with as much as the beach is not my thing, I was actually looking forward to it." Plus Luke had recommended it as a way to get over the weird of the kids.

And being Mommy. Ugh.

"I'm sorry," Jason said, sitting and wrapping an arm around Nico. "You should have found out sooner. Or something. That so isn't fair. I don't suppose I'll be able to call you?" It was a silly question, but he was asking it anyway.

"I don't actually have my own phone," Nico admitted, taking the hugging opportunity that Jason's arm offered. "But, I could see about calling you?"

"Jason, hi!" Bobby called, bouncing up to the door to give a little wave. He looked at the evidence of clothes being moved about. "Are you spring cleaning?"

Jason turned and found himself smiling at his smaller double. Darn contagious enthusiasm. "Hey Bobby," he said. "I'm trying to figure out what to pack for spring break. Are you going on the trip?"

"Yes! Mom didn't let us go in the fall, but Jack talked her into letting us go now. To Hawaii! I've never been to Hawaii. I hadn't ever been on a plane before I came here. This is going to be so cool!" he paused for breath just long enough to frown a little. "Um...but the trip's not for a couple days. Why are you packing now?"

"Because I've never been to Hawaii either, and I have no idea what to take," Jason said. "I'm only starting, for now."

"Huh." Bobby had to consider that. "I didn't think of needing to bring special stuff. I guess it'll be too hot to wear normal jeans and stuff. Maybe I should go start to pack too."

"I figured you'd have lists of stuff to pack, and then lists of all of your lists," Jason teased. "I just don't like getting caught without stuff I need."

"Well, I did look up the average temperature of the islands," Bobby said, totally missing the teasing. "The average high for February is 80 degrees and the low is about 60, but then they're coming out of the rainy season too so maybe it'll seem colder if it rains a lot. The driest side of the island is the south side, but I haven't been able to find if where we're staying is there or the north."

"It's on the north side," Jason said, because he wasn't about to cross an ocean and not have a clue as to where he was ending up. "But it had better not rain while we're there or people are gonna be pissed."

"I don't know," he said doubtfully. "The prevailing winds are from the northeast so when they hit land, they dump the water right away. Maybe it won't though. Or maybe it'll be fun in the rain too."

Jason couldn't help but laugh. "I think you're more prepared for the trip than I am, even without the packing. Something tells me you're not going to be working on your tan."

Bobby wrinkled his nose a little. "...is that what people do? They know that you get skin cancer from too much sun, right? And...it sounds boring."

"Lots of people do it, yeah. I don't think they really worry about skin cancer," Jason said. "And you can do stuff while getting tan. Like get drunk." Because that was totally something Bobby would be into, of course.
